The tradition began in the early 1950s, when on the first Friday after Thanksgiving retailers kicked off the Christmas discount season.
The rise of the web made Black Friday explode worldwide, leading up to recent years, when the discount-filled Black Friday is followed by Cyber Monday, which offers deals on hi-tech products.
