Motorcycle trips: the 5 most beautiful mountain routes in Italy

The 5 Italian mountain destinations to reach by motorcycle: When the heat starts to make itself felt, some people simply set off in search of cooler air. Here are 5 mountain passes that become a unique experience by motorcycle The mountains are a biker’s best friend, not only for those who fit knobblies and climb towards unexplored peaks on specialist enduros, but also for those who prefer tarmac and certainly do not want to give up winding roads leading to the top of the pass. Here are 5 Italian destinations that every motorcyclist should do at least once in a lifetime!

Passo Giau

In the heart of the Dolomites lies the Terrace of Europe, namely Passo Giau, which offers a panorama of truly exceptional beauty. The starting point for enjoying these ancient roads carved into the rock is Cortina D’Ampezzo, taking the SS51 westbound. After about 15 km and a couple of turns, you arrive at the foot of the pass, where 20 minutes of twisty riding await before continuing onto the SP638 and carrying on towards the Marmolada and Passo Fedaia. The final leg of the trip is crossing into Trentino Alto Adige, heading towards Canazei.

Abbruzzo

When talking about the mountains, one of the Italian regions most often mentioned is Abruzzo, the Wyoming of Italy. Precisely for being left in awe by the beauty of its landscapes, one destination you absolutely must reach is Passo Godi. You can set off from Sora, a town in Lazio in the heart of Ciociaria, and climb the slope of the Abruzzo National Park via the Forca D’Acero pass. Once in Pescasseroli, continue towards the beautiful Gole del Saggittario, which lead to the lakes of Barrea, Scanno and San Domenico, to complete a route of around 2 hours and 30 minutes of riding in the setting of Sulmona’s medieval centre.

Some people want to look for cooler air a little farther from home, and may also fancy breathing in some cross-border air. Visiting Passo del Sempione is therefore a perfect destination, because it reaches 2,005 metres in altitude and above all is the historic route linking Italy with Central Europe. The starting point is the town of Domodossola, where, taking Strada 9, we head towards the pass and Switzerland. Once at the top, however, you can continue towards Brig, carrying on enjoying the roads that run through woods and rocky walls. Do pay attention to the limits though: the Swiss police know how to leave even the most cautious rider stranded.

Stelvio

The Roof of Italy or The Queen of the Roads are just some of the nicknames that the Stelvio Pass has earned over time, and there’s a reason for that! More than 80 bends (including 36 hairpins in Lombardy and 48 in Trentino) make it a joy for every motorcyclist. Fascinating and challenging in both directions, this route requires a minimum of experience given the endless snake of bends and plenty of attention, because it’s not only motorcyclists who are eager to ride it, but also pedestrians, cyclists, motorhomes, and everything else besides.

Futa and Raticosa

Two roads that, for experienced motorcyclists, are the alternative on journeys along the spine of the Autostrada del Sole to the boredom of the A1 running through the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. To do this double, the best way is to set off from Tuscany, near Fiorenzuola, and head up towards the Futa; once at the summit, just continue towards Emilia-Romagna and you’ll come across the beautiful bends of the Raticosa, finishing the trip with a nice ride through the Bolognese hills, as Cesare Cremonini and friends used to do on their 50 Specials.
