Versatility is its strong point, and the look is timeless: but would the Himalayan be able to handle the dunes?

Here are 3 specials with a Dakar flavour

Royal Enfield Hymalayan needs no great introduction: among the best-sellers of the Indo-British brand, together with the Classic 500 Trial it represents the most adventurous spirit of the Redditch-based manufacturer. Its classic look combined with the 21” front wheel places it in the select circle of vintage enduros, alongside only the Moto Guzzi V85 TT and Triumph Scrambler 1200 XE, but some have wanted to push the extreme bar for the Himalayan further, turning it into a perfect Dakar bike, of yesterday and today.

Here are the most beautiful specials.

Royal Enfield Dakar Edition

In 2018, at the “Bangkok Motor Sale”, a very aggressive version of the Himalayan appeared, built by the brand’s Thai branch. Red-white-blue tricolour livery, a carbon headlight fairing with two small central round lights instead of the original front headlight unit, and a large smoked windscreen. The fairing is connected to the tank through a wraparound, protective body panel, just like on rally bikes. The original low mudguard is gone, replaced by a small high-mounted element positioned just below the beak; crash bars and two additional LED spotlights are also present. At the rear, meanwhile, there are number boards and a slim mudguard very similar to those found on enduro bikes. Naturally, the exhaust is also moved higher up. The ergonomics also change: a taller Pro-Taper handlebar and a new seat make it ready for anything. No changes to the engine: are 24 bhp enough to tackle the dunes? That’s something we should ask experienced riders, but the visual effect is impressive.

Royal Enfield Himalayan “Royal Rally 400”

A special that has actually undergone the “desert test”, passing it with flying colours, is the Royal Rally 400: a special inspired by the golden years of the Parigi-Dakar, those of the original route, and created by the expert hands of Fuel Motorcycles. This Himalayan in fact took part in the Scram Africa in 2019, organised by Fuel Motorcycles itself and dedicated to scramblers and specials, which takes place in Morocco. In this case too, the 411 cc single-cylinder engine of the Himalayan has not been touched, but the power delivery has had a few tweaks thanks to the exhaust, taken from a Suzuki RM-Z450, and the Powertronic ECU, to get that little bit of extra punch that never hurts. ROYAL RALLY 400 Fuell Naturally, the real star of the show is the new look: the front headlight has been replaced with a recessed rectangular unit set into a fairing that echoes the style of 1980s enduros. The fuel tank has been painted in “Marlboro” colours and stripped of its tubular guards. Slimmed down by removing all the excess parts, the Royal Rally features handguards and a single seat with luggage rack. A simple yet effective customisation that can inspire plenty of owners.

BAAK Himalayan 400

The French at BAAK blend present and past in their Himalayan, creating a proper “plug and play” parts kit to give owners the chance to transform their vintage-enduro in the garage. himalayan BAAK custom The price, including the bike, is 7,900 dollars, or the parts can be purchased individually (click here to see all the available BAAK accessories in our online shop). This special includes a fairing with windscreen and headlight grille, side infill panels between the front end and the fuel tank, 10W indicators, handlebar risers, exhaust silencer and Power Tronic ECU. In this case too, the look changes without distorting the lines of the Hymalan, and if this special has won you over, all you have to do is stop by and order the parts!
